You may have read this news on my Facebook page but we are very pleased to say that we have recently had our whole herd primed and Enferplex tested and I am delighted to say “All Clear”.
This alpaca business can be a very slow business sometimes especially when it comes to the breeding side. Popham Havengore won the Nationals last year and now finally, over a year later we have his first son hit the ground. Not quite the colour we were expecting but a quick look through his fleece and he’s definitely showing all the right signs. We have a few more on the way as things start getting very busy in the birthing paddock from now on…..
Last Monday saw the arrival of Popham’s first cria for 2016. Two suri girls, both sired by Dream Catcher. One enormous and the other coming in at half the weight of the first. Meet Swift and Kylie.
Another great show without any glitches apart from a downpour over lunch on Thursday. Many thanks to Shirley Bettison for judging, to Rob Bettison for a superb running commentary. to Garry Naish for ring stewarding, to both Jenny and Dawn for collecting stewards (this is the nasty job as you get your head bitten off occasionally), to Keith for recording everything including over 400 photos which I have had to shift through!!. Finally many thanks to Peter, my partner in crime. Another happy show!!
Big day yesterday with nearly 90 alpacas shorn. Great work by Colin Ottery and the team. Also for once the weather has been kind and we don’t have shivering alpacas everywhere. Only the show team left which Tracy and I will get through after Devon County Show next week.
We have some delightful young males, born in 2015 are now weaned, halter trained and ready to go. Both suri and huacaya mainly in browns and fawns. Suitable as pets or guards when older but of course beautiful fleece as you would expect from Popham animals. Please visit our website or follow the link.
Things are really moving on with the rebuild of the stables. The view is going to be amazing once we remove the muck heap!
Work has finally started on Popham’s new Alpaca Visitor Centre. The largely redundant stables will be “transformed” into a purpose built reception area/shop/classroom. So watch this space and we”ll update the blog with the photos of the progress.
Supreme Champion at the Nationals
Now the show is over we’ve taken the opportunity to have a good look at Carlos’s fleece and I think you’ll agree that these photos show why he was Supreme…..WOW
